Man arrested after hit and run; faces DUI, possession on jail premises charges

Following a hit-and-run crash in Aberdeen, 59-year-old James Spence is facing several charges, including DUI and possessing a controlled substance on jail premises.

Aberdeen Police Department said Spence crashed into a vehicle in the Meadow Ridge neighborhood on Tuesday and left the scene of the accident.

“Upon arrival, officers located the caller, whose vehicle had been struck,” said the Aberdeen Police Department in a media release. “Officers then located the suspect vehicle and the driver, identified as Spence. Officers began investigating the incident and determined that Spence showed significant signs of impairment. Testing was conducted, and Spence was arrested on suspicion of Misdemeanor Driving Under the Influence. Spence was also charged on the scene for Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Unsafe Moving Violation.”

The release said Spence was treated at Moore Regional Hospital before being transported to the detention center in Carthage.

“Upon a secondary search at the jail, officers located a controlled substance on Spence’s person,” said the release. “Spence was then charged with Felony Possess a Controlled Substance on Jail Premises.”

The suspect was given a $7,500 secured bond.
