A Moore County man was operating a motor scooter Friday evening at 9:50 pm on W. Pennsylvania Avenue in Southern Pines.

Affixed to this scooter was a vehicle registration plate from a passenger car and not a registration plate for a motor scooter, according to Southern Pines Police Department.

Officers attempted to stop this scooter at which time it accelerated, and Zayrrick Davill Boyd, 23, from the 900 block of N. Ashe Street in Southern Pines, engaged officers in a pursuit by failing to stop.

Upon reaching the 600 block of South Hardin Street in Southern Pines, Boyd stopped the scooter and attempted to flee on foot and was subsequently arrested by the pursuing officers.

Recovered at the time of his arrest was a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol which had an altered serial number, according to the news release. Further inspection of this firearm revealed a second serial number which was used to determine that this firearm was reported stolen in Rockingham, North Carolina.

Boyd was charged with fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, resisting a public officer, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm with altered serial number.

Boyd was placed at the Moore County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond, has a June 23rd court date, and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
