On a beautiful but dry New Year’s Day, a woods fire turned into a fast-moving threat for many homes in Southern Pines.
The fire was reported just before 12 p.m. on Thursday afternoon behind a residence in the area of Avenue of the Carolinas and Woodbine Way. Once units arrived on scene, they found a fast-moving woods fire that was threatening multiple homes along a golf course community.
Brush trucks were requested for mutual aid to assist with getting ahead of the approximately 10-15-acre fire.

Drift smoke from the fire could be seen from several miles away. The North Carolina Forest Service responded with a plow and put a line around the perimeter to help keep the fire from spreading further.
While units were on scene working the fire, a drone was utilized to provide an aerial view of the fire in order to ensure it was contained and that there were no hot spots in wooded areas not visible from the ground.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, and a fire marshal was on scene.
