Obituary for James Tony McKenzie of Pinehurst

James Tony McKenzie, 88, of Pinehurst, died March 21, 2024.

He was born February 7, 1936 in Pinehurst to the late William Ivey and Maggie Farmer McKenzie.

He graduated from Pinehurst High School as a Four Letter Athlete in 1955. He then began his career as a printer at the Pinehurst Print Shop then moving on to the Moore County News. For many years Tony was owner operator of The Village Printers, Inc. until his retirement.

Tony served his community for many years as a volunteer with the Pinehurst Fire Department and was recognized as Fireman of the Year in 1977.  He retired from the Fire Department with the rank of Captain.

He was an avid golfer with many trophies as evidence of his skills.  Tony was also an accomplished musician entertaining for many years around the Sandhills with his guitar and fellow musician Bob Burwell.

Tony love dogs, especially Black German Shepherds.  He was accompanied over many years with the following companions: Printer, Drucker, Tripp, Cam and Boo Boo along with Scruff his Jack Russell Terrier.

He is survived by his brother Marty McKenzie of Pinehurst.  He was predeceased by his parents, his son Shane, brothers Bill, Jack, Gene, Fred and his sister Faye.

The family respectfully request no flowers. Those who wish to express sympathy to consider a donation to their favorite charity in Tony’s name.
