John D. Wolfe died on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, in Southern Pines, NC. He was 88 years old. The only child of John J. Wolfe and Mildred Frost Wolfe he was born October 22, 1929 in Warren, PA, two days before the start of the great stock market crash of 1929.

John grew up in Sheffield and graduated from Sheffield High School. He was a four- year letterman in football. After graduation, he attended Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, PA. He spent his entire professional career working with his father for the J.J. Wolfe Oil Company on its leases in Farnsworth, Mead Township and Bull Hill. He was a fourth-generation independent oil producer. John met his wife Bonnie Jones Wolfe at Sunday school at the Sheffield United Methodist Church. They were married in Sheffield in 1953 and observed their 65th anniversary on August 22 of this year.

He was a lifelong outdoorsman and hunter. Joined always by an English Setter dog on the seat next to him in his truck. John celebrated the start of deer season for many years with a week-long retreat joined by distinguished friends from Warren at Bubbling Springs Camp in Cherry Grove. He served as a U.S. Navy reservist and was on board the U.S.S. Rizzi during maneuvers to and from Havana, Cuba. He coached little league and was a judge and starter for swim meets at the YMCA. He served as a deputy game protector for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, was a member of the North Star Lodge #241 F&AM, Coudersport Consistory, Zem Zem Shrine, and the Conewango Valley Country Club.

After retirement in 2000, he and Bonnie moved to Southern Pines, NC. An avid golfer at his home clubs of Talimore and Midsouth., He was a member of the Moore County Republican Club, a volunteer driver for Meals On Wheels, a volunteer for the U.S. Open and U.S. Kids Golf and at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Thrift Shop. He was also a member and patron of the Artists League of the Sandhills. Buck, as he was known by his grandsons, was a long time Penn State football fan and flew the Nittany Lion flag proudly on football Saturday’s.

John is survived by his wife Bonnie, a son Tom, of Arlington, VA a daughter, Pam and her husband Jim Bolen of Fredericksburg, VA. Three grandsons, Spenser and his wife Patricia Bolen of Fredericksburg, VA, Blair Bolen of Clemson, SC and Landon Bolen of Richmond, VA. One great-grandson, Heath John Bolen, born on September 14, 2018.

A memorial will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Southern Pines on Tuesday, October 2 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at the Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church columbarium in Warren on October 5.
