Sheriff warns of scam circulating the county

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields is warning residents of a current scam circulating around the county.

Fields announced Wednesday the sheriff’s office received reports that citizens are receiving scam phone calls.

“In recent reports, citizens are contacted by an unspecified number and told they are speaking with a member of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office,” said Fields in a news advisory. “The caller is asking for money donations on behalf of fallen officers. However, when the number is redialed, it states that it is a non-working number. No one from the Moore County Sheriff’s Office would call and ask for money over the phone.”

Fields is also warning residents of another scam call.

A report came into the department of a person claiming to be a worker with the Social Security Administration announcing “there is a problem with your Social Security number.” Fields said do not reveal any private information and hang up if you have doubts about the validity of the call.
