Sunrise Live presents its first musical: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Grab a D-I-C-T-I-O-N-A-R-Y and welcome to the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

This heartfelt Tony-Award-winning musical follows a group of wonderfully unique and impassioned adolescents as they compete for the bee championship.

Featuring a thrilling score by William Finn, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a joyful night of comedy and quirk that celebrates the pursuit of victory, and the gift of being true to oneself.

Sunrise Live is thrilled to bring this musical to life featuring your incredibly talented local community actors as well as a full live band. Shows begin August 11 and run on weekends through August 20. It’s sponsored by First Bank and Swank Coffee.

Now into its second season, Sunrise Live has continued to build momentum and interest in the community for live theater performances and attract some of the best local talent in the Sandhills.

“This cast is going to blow you away!” says co-director Amy Damone. “I am always in awe of the level of talent we have right here in our community. They bring this wonderful, hilarious, story to life with such ease, and I cannot wait to share this show with everyone!”

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is an incredibly fun, funny, quirky, and interactive musical that follows the journey of six spellers as they try to become the Bee champion. Throughout the show, you learn about each of their lives and challenges they may have faced in order to end up on that stage, gunning for the win.

The story is further brought to life through full-band musical numbers, led by Dr. Larry Arnold, that will have you laughing and crying. Dr. Larry Arnold recently retired from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke as Professor of Music where he taught audio production, instrumental and vocal jazz, rock history, piano, and bass. He also co-founded the UNC Pembroke Media Integration Studies program, which focuses on the creative use of computer technology in an interdisciplinary, student-centered environment. He has often been an instrumentalist and musical director in regional musical theatre with the Temple Theatre, Sandhills Repertory Theatre, and Cape Fear Regional Theatre.
