Thousands of chickens die in West End fire

Thousands of chickens died in a fire in West End. Multiple departments across Moore County, along with a ladder truck from Montgomery County, responded to a chicken house fire on Sunday morning.

The alarm for the commercial structure fire in the 4000 block of Dowd Road went out just after 7 a.m. The first arriving unit reported a chicken house with heavy fire, threatening two other chicken houses.

A county tanker strike team shuttled water onto the scene from down a long dirt road. Two water points were set up to fill trucks. One was near Dowd Road and Mt. Carmel Road, and the other was at the intersection of Love Grove Church Road and Carthage Road.

Firefighters protected the chicken house on each side of the destroyed one.

According to officials, even though one of the other houses had minimal damage and another had some exterior damage, a representative from Mountaire Farms would most likely assess the damage and check the viability of the chickens in those houses.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation.
