Man sentenced to life for murder of five-year-old girl in Aberdeen

A mother and her boyfriend, who were staying at an Aberdeen motel, were arrested Monday in the death of a five-year-old girl.

According to Aberdeen Police Chief Carl Colasacco, Cody Davis and Ashley Vinesett, both from Spartanburg, S.C., rushed the child to the FirstHeath Moore Regional Hospital Emergency Room Monday. Shortly after arrival, the girl was pronounced deceased.

Authorities declined to release the cause of death pending official autopsy results.

Due to the condition of the child, the emergency room notified Pinehurst Police Department per protocol. Once Pinehurst Police learned the child was brought in from the Super 8 on U.S. Highway 1, they notified Aberdeen Police Department.

Aberdeen Police immediately responded to the motel, and additional officers went to the emergency room. Davis and Vinesett were taken into custody and transported to the Moore County Sherriff’s Office as the investigation continued.

The couple was subsequently placed under arrest. Davis, 34, was charged with first-degree murder, felony child abuse with severe bodily injury, and possession of stolen goods/property. Vinesett, 34, was charged with felony child abuse with severe bodily injury.

Davis is being held at the Moore County Detention Center without bond. His first court appearance is Thursday. Davis is a convicted felon in the state of North Carolina and was released from prison in August 2020.

Vinesett is being held at the Moore County Detention Center with a $500,000 secured bond. Her first appearance is on Thursday.

This is an ongoing investigation and developing story. The story will be updated when more information becomes available.
