Each summer, the tranquil greens and rolling sandhills of the Pinehurst area transform into a vibrant mosaic of global talent, youthful passion, and family camaraderie. Now in its 21st year, the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships returns, bringing not only world-class competition but also an opportunity for the local community to play a meaningful role.
Since its 2005 arrival in the Sandhills, the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships have brought together the best young golfers from around the globe. This year’s event is expected to be its largest and most diverse yet, with more than 2,200 players—boys and girls ages 5 to 18, competing across more than a dozen area courses. Representing over 60 countries, these junior athletes don’t just compete for trophies; they create lifelong memories, friendships, and experiences many describe as life-changing.
While the young players may take center stage, it is the dedication of local volunteers that makes the championships possible year after year. From the moment the players and their families arrive to the final putt, volunteers serve as the backbone of the tournament, welcoming international guests, assisting players, and ensuring each course operates seamlessly.
“Every year it’s like a mini-Olympics of junior golf,” says Leigh Ann Eshelman, volunteer chairman for the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships, in a press release. “You hear dozens of languages, see kids trading flags and pins, and it’s something you never forget. Yet for many volunteers, the greatest rewards include the smile of a young golfer sinking a putt, the friendships formed across cultures and the pride of helping create a once-in-a-lifetime experience for families from around the world.”
As the championships enter their 21st year in Pinehurst, organizers are calling on community members to once again step forward and be part of this unforgettable experience. With the event taking place at the height of summer, a significant number of volunteers are needed to fill essential roles. Opportunities are available across a variety of committees, including player registration, player shuttles, on-course supply, volunteer control, pace of play, starters, spotters, and scoring.
Volunteer recruitment is now underway, with a strong hope that longtime supporters will return and that new volunteers will join them. Spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and early registration is encouraged to secure your preferred assignment.
The U.S. Kids Golf Foundation provides an easy-to-use online registration system where volunteers can select their preferred course, assignment, and schedule.
The impact of the championships reaches far beyond the fairways. The event generates nearly $16 million annually for the local economy and continues to elevate the Pinehurst area’s reputation as a global golf destination.
