Woman hit killed after walking away from car crash

A serious crash Tuesday night near Vass sent one person to an area trauma center and left a woman dead.

Emergency units were dispatched to the two-vehicle accident in the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 between Highway 690 and Crains Creek Road around 8:30 p.m.

A Range Rover traveling north at a high rate of speed rear-ended a Toyota FJ Cruiser, according to officials. The impact caused the Range Rover to lose control, crossing into the median before striking the cable barrier, leaving it with extensive front and passenger side damage.

The collision sent the Toyota off the right shoulder and down the embankment where it flipped over. It caught on fire with the female driver still inside. She was the only occupant.  By the time the driver was free of the vehicle, she had sustained multiple serious burns. Firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze. The woman was transported from the scene to a landing zone at the Vass ball field and was flown to an area trauma center. Her condition is unknown at this time.

A pickup truck that was traveling behind one of the responding fire trucks struck and killed a pedestrian that had stepped out into the flow of traffic, said authorities. No one was in or around the Range Rover when units arrived, and it was later determined the pedestrian was the driver of that vehicle, who was identified as 41-year-old Jessica Perkins from Southern Pines. The driver of the truck was not injured and was not charged in the accident.

A dog was also in the Range Rover but was not injured. Moore County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services picked up the animal.
