Car crashes into apartment

An elderly woman in Southern Pines enjoying a nice, quiet evening in her apartment Wednesday evening now has quite the story to tell.

She began to smell smoke and thought her apartment was on fire. After dialing 911 and talking to dispatch, several departments were paged out for a structure fire, but the woman discovered that a car had actually crashed into it and was smoking.

Fire units quickly arrived to Pinebrook Apartments on S. E. Service Road and W. Illinois to find a Saturn passenger car had run over the curb and was partially inside the structure. After assessing the situation, mutual aid was canceled.

The front half of the car was in the woman’s bedroom with the rear half just outside of the structure. She told personnel on the scene, “I was just in that room a few minutes ago, and had a feeling I needed to get out.”

The female driver reportedly admitted to police that she had been drinking and was taken into custody. She appeared to be uninjured but was taken to Moore Regional Hospital to be checked out.

The fire department put boards in place to give some stability to the structure until repairs can be made and put up plastic to cover the giant hole in the wall.

The power company was also dispatched to disconnect power from the apartment.

Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Southern Pines Police, and Moore County Fire Marshal.
