Car transporting shooting victim to hospital wrecks

The victim of a shooting in Southern Pines was in a wreck on the way to the hospital Saturday night. The car came upon the Pinehurst traffic circle from Highway 15-501 and ran across the median and into the roadway of the circle. 

Multiple law enforcement and emergency crews responded to the scene. Due to the extensive injuries from the shooting, a helicopter was called. The shooting victim was removed from the car, and paramedics transported the victim to the field at the Arboretum in Pinehurst. UNC Tarheel 2 then airlifted the patient to a trauma center. 

According to Southern Pines Police Deputy Chief Charles Campbell, the shooting occurred in the 600 block of Rothney Avenue. This was not a random act of violence. Campbell also said the person is in stable condition. 

According to the police incident report, several shell casings were found on the scene of the shooting.

No other information is being released at this time.
