Crains Creek Fire Department received a 3/9E inspection rating on Aug. 24 from the state.
The inspection was conducted by the North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey as required by the North Carolina Response Rating System (NCRRS).
“With the continuous hard work of our members and Board of Directors we have lowered our Insurance Rating once again,” said Crains Creek Fire Department on its Facebook page. “We are happy to say that we have obtained a class 3 rating. This new rating will be effective December 1st, 2022. We would also like to thank the community for your continuous support and helping us make this happen.”
The NCRRS rating system ranges from one (highest) to 10 (not recognized as a certified fire department by the state). Rural departments have an average rating of 9S. “We are the first non municipal department to do this in Moore County,” said Crains Creek Fire Chief Kenneth Mackey.
Staffing levels, sufficient equipment, proper maintenance of equipment, communications capabilities and availability of water are included in the routine inspections.
Lower scores do not indicate poor service, and a higher rating does not indicate it is better equipped.
Higher ratings can “significantly” lower homeowners’ insurance.
“I would like to congratulate Chief Mackey for the department’s performance and for the hard work of all the department’s members,” said Commissioner Causey in a press release. “The citizens in the town of these districts should rest easy knowing they have a fine group of firefighters protecting them and their property in case of an emergency.”
