Several people were injured after a car accident in front of Chick-Fil-A on Highway 15-501 in Southern Pines Thursday evening that occurred around 6:30.

The accident involved a Ford Explorer and a Toyota Corolla. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage and debris was scattered across the highway. The Explorer struck a tree just off the road before coming to rest.

A two-vehicle accident snarled traffic during the rush-hour commute.

Highway 15-501 had both northbound lanes shut down for an extended period of time while emergency crews worked.

Three ambulances responded to the scene to transport the victims to Firsthealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Southern Pines Police were on the scene and investigating the cause of the accident.

Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Southern Pines Police Department.
