John Gideon “Gid” Matthews passed away peacefully on September 19, 2019 at his home in Southern Pines, N.C. He was born on May 9, 1936 to Matt and Kate Matthews in Aberdeen, NC.

He attended Aberdeen Schools, graduating from Aberdeen High School in 1956.  He was an exceptional athlete, excelling in basketball. He traveled throughout the U.S. as a Union pipefitter. He returned to Moore County where he met Ann Smith.  They were married in 1978. He and Ann were active in the shag and square dancing clubs. They also enjoyed traveling together.

Gid enjoyed golf and other sports, theater, cooking, entertaining, and eating good food with good friends of which he had many!!!

He is survived by his sister Gladys Harris (Lloyd), step-daughter Stephanie Baldwin (Jimmy); stepson, David Smith and his daughter Crystal Smith and great-grandson Brayton, daughter-in-law KC Smith and her son, John Lee Smith.  He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Ann Matthews, his brother Bill Matthews, his sister Cathryn Braly, and grandson Josh Baldwin.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 28th, 10:00 AM graveside service at Bethesda Cemetery and a memorial service at 11:00 AM at Bethesda Presbyterian Church located at 1002 N. Sandhills Blvd., Aberdeen; followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.

Memorial contributions in Gid’s memory may be made to the Friends of Aberdeen Library, P.O. Box 583, Aberdeen, NC 28315; Bethesda Cemetery Association, Inc., 502 N. Poplar St., Aberdeen, NC 28315;or to a charity of your choice.
