Obituary for Lillian Burns McKenzie of Aberdeen

Lillian Burns McKenzie, age 78, of Aberdeen, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, April 25, 2022, at 2:00pm at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dean Lucas officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home from 1 until 2. Burial will follow at Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Aberdeen.

Lillian was born in Lumberton, North Carolina on November 21, 1943, to the late Rev. Rufus and Avie Locklear Burns. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Murphy McKenzie, sisters, Maggie Oxendine, Mary Cleveland, brothers, Rev. Billy Burns, Rev. Bobby Burns, Rev. O.J. Burns, Rev Joseph Burns, Delton Burns, Rufus Burns, Jr., Grant Burns, Ernest “Sam” Burns.

She was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church. She touched the lives of many people with her smile and generous heart and was always giving to others.

Lillian was the proud owner of Lillian Family Daycare, before she retired, she touch the lives of many children most who called her grandma. She was a phenomenal cook any and all were always welcome at her table. Her happiest moments were surrounded by her family and friends, hosting dinners, cookouts, sitting on the porch laughing and cutting up. Lillian loved traveling with her husband Lewis, going to the casino’s playing her favorite game of poker, bingo being a close second. She loved babies and babies loved her, she had a special touch and could rock them for hours. She adored her grandchildren and they adored her.  She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her children, Tammy Haywood and husband Randy of Aberdeen, Gail McKenzie of Hoffman, Murphy Lewis McKenzie, Jr. and wife Heather of Sanford, Jennifer McKenzie of Aberdeen; sister, Betty Kilroy of Lumberton; brothers, Sanford “Teat” Burns of Maxton Grantford Oxendine Lumberton; eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Lillian McKenzie to Alzheimers Foundation of America.
