Obituary for Vickie Jo Holcomb of Pinebluff

Vickie Jo Holcomb, 71, of Pinebluff, passed away on July 15, 2024 in her home that she shared with her partner, Chris Blum.

Vickie Jo was born on December 6, 1952 in Leesburg, Virginia to the late Mae “Nickie” Heflin Holcomb and Buddy Jo Holcomb.

In addition to her parents, Vickie Jo was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Victoria Boston, whom she was a devoted caregiver.

After graduating from West Holmes High School in 1970, she went on to study nursing at Sandhills Community College.  Vickie Jo’s time caring for her daughter launched her career in nursing as she wanted to give back to others.  She started her nursing career shortly after graduation at UNC Children’s Hospital as a pediatric nurse from 1990-1996.  When the commute became more difficult she moved her career closer to home.  She was a NICU nurse and pediatrics nurse at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.  Being closer to home also gave her the opportunity to enjoy bowling again.  She enjoyed being part of a bowling league and convincing her daughter to also join the team.

Vickie Jo enjoyed gardening, as putting her hands in the dirt reminded her of her life growing up on the farm with her family.  Summer vacations always brought her extended family to the farm and an enjoyable time in her life with her cousins making lifelong memories.

When her family sold the farm they moved around from Virginia, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Kansas and back to Virginia when she had her children.  When her parents moved to North Carolina she would shortly follow needing assistance with her children due to Victoria’s illness.

The last few years brought happiness she had not seen in several years as she reconnected with her high school sweetheart, Chris.  After retirement she spent her time with family and friends, loving on her animals and focusing on her love with God.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Boston Polley (Gregory Thomas Polley); granddaughters, Zoe Elizabeth Polley, Caroline Jean Polley, and Rachael Greer Polley; partner, Chris Blum; her beloved cat, Toby and dog, Harry; also survived by many other cousins, aunts, uncles and family and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 6:00 PM at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines with Pastor Chris Wilson officiating.  Visitation to follow services until 8:00 PM.  Private burial will be held at Union Cemetery in Leesburg, Virginia at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 which was a charity Vickie Jo felt strongly about.
