She attended Hillside Public Schools and then attended Trenton State Teachers College and Montclair State Teachers College, graduating as a Speech Pathologist in 1954. She received her Masters from Columbia Teachers College and taught in the Newark, NJ and Hartford, CT public schools for many years.

Her great passion was to travel and over the years she and her husband (married on December 28, 1952), Irving Schwartzbach, spent time in all fifty states and many foreign countries. After retirement, they moved to Pinehurst, NC so that they could be near their daughter, Caryl, who graduated with a doctorate in Chemistry and works in the Triangle area. While in Pinehurst, Selma was active in the League of Women Voters and the Red Hats. She took a leadership position in both of these organizations.

Surviving her are her husband, Irving, Caryl (and husband Alan Bolzan), and her grandchildren, Zachary and Lauren Bolzan of Chapel Hill.
Following the services, the family will receive visitors at the home. In memoriam, people are encouraged to make donations to the Sandhills Food Bank located: 195 Sandy Ave in Southern Pines, North Carolina 28387 or the Parkinson Research Foundation (www.michaeljfox.org).
