Pedestrian airlifted after hit-and-run outside Aberdeen

A pedestrian was airlifted with traumatic injuries after a hit-and-run incident in Aberdeen on Friday afternoon.

According to State Highway Patrol, a man was walking on the road in the 400 block of Sandpit Road shortly after 3:30 p.m. when he was struck by the mirror of a vehicle. The man was knocked down and sustained traumatic injuries as a result of the collision, and the driver fled the scene.

Authorities on the scene noted that the man was not crossing the street but was “walking pretty far out there.”

As a result, the 28-year-old man was transported to a nearby landing zone on Sandpit Road via Moore County EMS, where he was subsequently airlifted to an area trauma center for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

The NC State Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation to determine what kind of vehicle struck the man. 


UPDATE: The Highway Patrol is looking for a vehicle of interest in the hit-and-run. If you can identify the vehicle in the photo below or have any information, please call the NC Highway Patrol Command Center at (704) 292-1539. Tell them you need to reach Trooper Garner in Moore County.

UPDATE on Nov. 18: According to NC Highway Patrol Trooper Garner, Hailey Smith, 42, was arrested and is facing charges of passenger flee an accident with injury death, fail to report accident, and failure to reduce speed. She is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
