Several blocks of Aberdeen were without power for an hour after a truck struck a utility pole on Sunday night. A white Dodge pickup truck crashed into the side of Mac’s Breakfast Anytime on U.S. 1, leaving damage, fire, and power outages in its wake.
According to authorities, the truck reportedly left a local restaurant on U.S. 1 before turning onto Poplar Street. It then veered off the right side of the road, struck a power pole, and slammed into Mac’s Breakfast Anytime.
The impact caused two transformers to ignite, along with a nearby dumpster. The Aberdeen Fire Department arrived on scene and quickly got the fire under control. Duke Energy arrived and cut power to surrounding areas due to the fire, the extent of damage sustained by the equipment, and downed power lines.
Three people were in the truck at the time of the crash. One person fled the scene, though authorities have not been able to confirm if the individual was the driver. The person was located and arrested by law enforcement about a mile from the scene.
No further details have been released at this time.
The crash caused widespread power outages, affecting a several-block radius for over an hour. Residents and businesses, including shoppers at Walmart, reported flickering lights, and homes as far south as the area of Aberdeen Lake Park were affected.
Responding units included the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, Aberdeen Fire Department, and Aberdeen Police.
