Sheriff announces elderly exploitation arrest

A New York man was arrested after allegedly exploiting an elderly person in Seagrove.

“On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office received a report for obtaining property by false pretense and exploitation of an elderly in the Seagrove area of Moore County,” said Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields in a press release. “The suspect obtained money from the victim by posing as Apple security and the FBI.”

The next day, Xiaojun Zhu, 30, of Brooklyn, New York, was arrested and jailed at the Moore County Detention Center under a $1 million secured bond.

Zhu is facing charges of one count of felony obtaining property by false pretense, one count of felony accessing computers, one count of felony exploitation of an elder adult, one count of felony possession of cocaine, one count of felony maintaining a vehicle for controlled substance, one count of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, and four counts of resisting a public officer.

“This investigation is still ongoing,” said Fields. “Anyone with information about Zhu is requested to contact investigators with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office or Moore County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at 910-947-4444.”

Defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
