Drivers airlifted after head-on crash on Lobelia Road

A head-on crash occurred on Lobelia Road, in the curve before Pats Road, outside Vass on Wednesday. The collision occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m.

According to authorities on the scene, the driver of a Ford Ranger ran off the road, overcorrected, crossed into the oncoming travel lane, and was struck by a Dodge Durango. The Durango then rolled into a nearby field, where it stopped upright. Both vehicles were occupied only by the drivers and obtained heavy damage.

The drivers of both of the vehicles obtained serious injuries in the collision, and after evaluation by EMS, air care responded to the scene. A landing zone was set up on the scene. UNC Tarheel 1 and Cape Fear Valley Air 1 flew the patients to a nearby trauma center.

Both lanes of Lobelia Road were closed during the transfer of patients to the helicopters, investigation of the scene, and removal of vehicles.

N.C. Highway Patrol was on the scene for an investigation of the crash.
