Hunters help save man from burning car

Two hunters helped save a man from a burning car in Robbins Saturday.

Around 4 p.m., authorities received a call of a single-vehicle accident with the driver trapped in a burning car.

While the 911 call was being placed, a hunter and his father were trying to gain access to the driver trapped inside the Toyota Camry.

The young man, named Tyler, and his father were hunting in the woods on J. Dowdy Road when he heard the crash.

“I thought a tree fell; I went out of the woods and heard my mom screaming,” said Tyler. “My dad and I ran to see if we could help. I thought he was going to burn in there. I ran back to the house to get my truck and a chain to pull the door open.”

Members of Robbins Fire and Rescue arrived on scene and immediately put the fire out. The fire was contained to the inside of the car.

The driver was taken to a landing zone at Calvary Baptist Church on Crabtree Road and Plank Road. The man was airlifted to an area trauma center. His condition was critical but stable at the time the life flight took off.

It appeared the driver was heading on J. Dowdy Road toward Highway 24-27 when he ran off the road and hit a brick driveway, said authorities on scene. It is unclear if speed was a factor, and the accident is being investigated by N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Robbins Police Department and Moore County Sheriff’s Department were also on the scene to assist.

J. Dowdy Road was closed while officials worked the scene. Crabtree Road, at Calvary Baptist Church, was closed for approximately thirty minutes to allow a helicopter to land.
