A 20-year-old man was airlifted to a trauma center after reportedly sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest in Southern Pines on Saturday night.
Emergency crews responded around 8:02 p.m. to the 800 block of Richards Street after being alerted to the incident.
The victim was transported by EMS to a helicopter landing zone established at a ballfield along Morganton Road, where he was flown to a medical facility for treatment.

Emergency vehicles line the street near Memorial Park.
While crews worked, there was a heavy law enforcement presence around Memorial Ballfield, where the landing zone was secured. Officers restricted access around the helicopter landing area, and additional police units were sighted in nearby neighborhoods.
Units responding to the scene included the Southern Pines Police Department, Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Authorities on scene did not release the victim’s identity, and additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately available. This is a developing story and will be updated as the Southern Pines police continue their investigation.
