Obituary for Charles Tony Poindexter of Sanford

Charles Tony Poindexter, age 82, of Sanford went to be with his Lord on January 16, 2024, after his brave 10-year battle with cancer.

A native of North Carolina, he was a son of the late Romie Dallas and Mollie Underwood Poindexter. He was a simple, selfless, and humble man, who, over the course of his lifetime, enjoyed the simple things…. hunting, fishing, and socializing. He was a generous and kind individual, always willing to help others. His personality and charisma made friends easily, and his smile was infectious to those around him. As the owner/operator of Tony’s Grocery in Carthage for 43 years, the guy who wore red shirt and blue slacks, he loved hearing stories from his patrons, usually while enjoying a nab and sipping a Coke or Pepsi. Tony was a masterful storyteller himself. He focused on providing his family with the best life he could, without worrying about himself. He was a man of true integrity, not budging under the circumstance. He was a charter member of and served faithfully at Miracle Baptist Church for many years, including as Deacon and Treasurer. He will be remembered as someone who was genuinely interested in the lives of those with whom he came into contact. His impact will be forever felt by his family and friends. His passing leaves an unfillable gap in the hearts of his loved ones.  His ability to sacrifice, provide, support, forgive, and love will forever be ingrained in everyone he knew. Tony was preceded in death by his wife Geneva Poindexter and sister, Shirley Marsh. Thankfully, we are confident he is enjoying their company in Heaven.

He is survived by his children: Shelley (Wayne) Jones of West End, Dr. Keith and Julie Poindexter of Carthage, brother Richard (Glenda) Poindexter of Durham and his grandchildren: Adam (Kelly) Jones, Anthony (Erin) Jones, Jessie Jones, Keilie Poindexter, Cody Jones, Dallas Poindexter, Lilia Jones, Camden Poindexter, and Bella Jones, as well as five great grandchildren.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the friends and caregivers who cared for Tony so well in the latter part of his life, making him safe and comfortable in his own home until the Lord called him to glory. This includes Kathy Johnson, Merle Taylor, Peggy Tyndall, Tammy Stewart, Patricia Armstrong, Johnny Clark, and the nurses at FirstHealth Hospice.

There will be a visitation at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage from 5-7 PM on Friday, January 19, 2024. A funeral service will be at Red Branch Baptist Church in Carthage on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 11 AM. The family will receive friends following the service at New Covenant Fellowship Church. A graveside service will follow at Miracle Baptist Cemetery in Sanford at 3:00 PM.
