A head-on crash claimed the lives of two people near Robbins on Thursday afternoon. Multiple agencies responded to the scene on Highway 24/27 near McDuffie Road around 3 p.m.
According to the N.C. State Highway Patrol, two people were traveling in a Chevy Cruze headed east on Highway 24/27 when the vehicle abruptly veered over the centerline into the path of a semi-truck traveling westbound.
The semi-driver slammed on the brakes but could not avoid colliding with the Chevy Cruze. The people in the Cruze died on the scene. N.C. State Highway Patrol identified the deceased as Matthew McLennan, 30, of Dunn, and Nancy Williams, 25, of Oakboro.
A Dodge RAM was also hit after the impact. The semi-truck came to a rest sideways in the road, with the truck’s cab hitting a tree.
Troopers say there is no indication at this time why the Cruze veered into oncoming traffic, and they continue their investigation.
The drivers of the RAM and the semi were not injured in the crash. The highway was shut down for a few hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
