First Bank robbed in downtown Southern Pines

First Bank in downtown Southern Pines was robbed at 1 p.m. Tuesday. An arrest was made shortly after the robbery, according to Southern Pines Police Deputy Chief Charles Campbell.

William Johnson, 60, was arrested on charges of common law robbery, possession of stolen goods/property, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, and simple possession of schedule VI controlled substance, according to jail records.

He was placed at the Moore County Detention Center under a $1 million secured bond. The detention center lists his address as homeless/Southern Pines.

Southern Pines police arrived on the scene at the intersection of Broad Street and E. New York Ave. They cordoned off the bank’s entrance with police tape.

“Upon officer’s arrival, information was obtained from bank personnel,” said Campbell in a statement issued to Sandhills Sentinel. “Based upon the information gathered, an immediate search of the area was conducted where William Wayne Johnson was located and arrested.”

Campbell said no other information is being released at this time.

The suspect is due in court on Jan. 3 and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
