In Loving Memory of Charles Kenneth Smith
Charles Kenneth Smith, 79 years of age, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Charles (Kenny) was born August 28, 1943, in Indianapolis, Indiana, son of the late Charles P. and Twyla B. Smith. He was the youngest of two children, his sister Shirley A. Smith (James) preceded him in death.
Kenny graduated from Shortridge High School, Indianapolis, Indiana in 1961. After graduating from high school, Kenny served in the United States Army, was stationed in Korea, and returned to Indianapolis, after an honorable discharge from the military. He was employed at the United States Postal Service.
Kenny married Carol Yvonne Boone (Smith) in 1968 and two children were born, Holly Yvonne Smith (Crawford) and Robin Javonne Smith (Spekman). He completed a BA Degree in Sociology from Indiana University. The family moved to Milwaukee, WI in 1978, when he was hired to work for the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development until his retirement in 2007. He retired to Foxfire Village, North Carolina.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling and driving long distances. He also enjoyed go-karting, watching NASCAR and bowling in a league. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and cousin, always thinking of others first.
Kenny is survived by his wife, Dr. Carol Yvonne; children, Holly Y. (Shaolin) of Frederick, Maryland, and Robin J. (Rachel) of Boston, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Samuel N. Crawford, Ashanti S. Crawford, Mussa N. Crawford, and Lucas B. Crawford, Issac C. Spekman, and Lena M. Spekman; nieces, Stephanie Beggs (Nyall) of Washington, D.C., Nicole Long (Joseph) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Rene Casey of Indianapolis, Indiana; nephews, Rodney W. Redman (Phyllis) of High Falls, North Carolina, Oley Redman (Cynthia) of Bogalusa, Louisiana, and a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
No public viewing will be held in North Carolina or Indiana. A visitation will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana on Friday, August 18, 2023, from 11:00 A.M. – 12:00 Noon. Followed by a memorial service at Kenny’s home church, Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, 261 W. 25th Street at Fall Creek Parkway, 46208, with the Repast at Progressive Life Ministries, 6700 Michigan Road, 46268. Flowers, donations, and condolences may be offered at 401 Reynwood Court, Foxfire Village, NC 27281.
