Helen Apple, age 90, of Lakeview, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, July 5, 2026.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 10th, 2026, at Lakeview Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am with Pastor Julie Hughes Officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 11:00 am in the church. Burial will follow in Cypress Springs Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cameron, NC.
Helen was born in Hoke County on August 12, 1935, to the late Raymond and Lillian Johnson.
She graduated from Greensboro High School, where she was a member of the basketball team. She went on to Greensboro Business College, where she excelled in shorthand and typing. She became one of the first employees of Sandhills Community College in 1965 and worked there until she retired in 1998. She was inducted into the Sandhills Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. She married the love of her life, Lewis Apple, in 1957, who preceded her in death in October of 2025.
Helen and Lewis raised two children, Mike Apple of Lakeview and the late Wendy Apple McRae, also of Lakeview. She was a devoted wife and mother, had a love of sports, especially basketball, and loved puzzle solving and reading. She loved cooking and working at the college and doting on her grandchildren.
She is survived in life by her son Mike (Dawn); grandchildren Andrew (Nicole) Apple, Abby Howard (Mark), Maggie Harris, Will Apple (Alyssa), Eric McRae; great grandchildren Stella Livengood, Lily Howard, Madison Apple, Amelia Apple, Luke Howard and Ila Howard.
