A driver escaped uninjured on Friday night after the engine compartment of his car caught fire. The driver was traveling on Pee Dee Road, just off Highway 211, in Aberdeen at the time of the incident, and it was thanks to quick thinking and the help of a good Samaritan that he escaped unharmed.
According to authorities, the driver had attempted to turn his vehicle around when the engine caught fire. The driver pulled over and safely exited the car before the fire spread.
Another motorist who witnessed the incident pulled over and used a fire extinguisher to help contain the flames before emergency crews arrived.
The Aberdeen Fire Department responded to the scene and successfully extinguished the fire, which had caused extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. Despite the damage, no injuries were reported.
Pee Dee Road at the intersection of Highway 211 was temporarily shut down for safety reasons while firefighters worked to control the situation and clear the wreckage. The roadway remained closed until a wrecker service could remove the vehicle.
The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
