obituary for Barbara Jean McLaughlin Dozier

Barbara Jean McLaughlin Dozier was the youngest of six children born to Mary Lee McNeil and Daniel McLaughlin. She had three sisters, Morine, Mollie, and Minnie, and two brothers, James and Johnny (deceased). She is the natural mother of two, Anthony Dwayne Dozier and Tonia LaTrease Dozier Green. She is the grandmother of six, Alexis, Tai, Tori, and Marc Dozier – Taryn and Eva Green. There are many others who have adopted her as a godmother, mom, or grandma.
 
She earned a diploma from Pinckney High School, a Bachelor of Science in Education from Barber Scotia College in Concord, NC, and a Master of Arts in Education from New York University, with further study at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY.
 
One of her greatest loves was teaching and working with people, especially the young ones. She has been in education since 1971, serving over 37 of those years teaching in the New York school system. She served many roles during her career in education: a children’s counselor for the City of New York, supervisor of an after school program for Nepperhan Community Center, Coordinator of Consumer Education for the City of New Rochelle, teacher and recruiter for the Co-Ho program in Yonkers, NY. She operated a sewing school for Sears Department Store for 4 years. She co-authored and field-tested the Home and Careers Curriculum for the NY State Education Department. She co-founded the Freedom Daycare in the Jackie Roberson Housing Complex.
 
Her early Christian experience was in Stone Chapel Church in Carthage, NC. She joined Bethany AME Church in Yonkers, NY, in 1977 under the pastorate of Rev. Edward M. Bailey. During her nearly 50 years as a member, she served in many different capacities: Young Peoples Choir director, Gospel Choir member, Local YPD director and founding member, Trustee, Director of the Missionary, Christian Education Director, Willing Worker, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, member and later President of the Local Lay Organization, Administrative Assistant to the Pastor, member of Bethany’s Nonprofit Board, Pastor’s Aide, and Vice Chairperson of the Board of Stewards. She briefly served as Area Director of Christian Education for Brooklyn-Westchester.
 
On the conference levels, she served as a member and secretary of the Board of Christian Education, 2nd Vice President of NY Conference Lay for 8 years, elected Delegate to the General Conference several times, and Director of Public Relations for the NY Conference Lay for 8 years, NY Conference Trustee for 12 years.
 
She received the Drum Major Award for Service from President Obama in 2014.
Other affiliations are NYSFACS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, AFT, NYSFT, YFT, Alliance of African American Educators of Yonkers and NABSE.
 
Celebrating her memories are: her children, Anthony Dozier and Tonia Dozier Green; three sisters, Morine Watson, Mollie McLaughlin, and Minnie Street; one brother, James McLaughlin; six grandchildren, Alexis, Tai, Tori, and Marc Dozier, Taryn and Eva Green; two great grandchildren, Zia and Zara Dozier; and a host of other relatives and friends too numerous to name.
 
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 23, at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Pugh & Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Stone Chapel Church Cemetery in Carthage.
