Obituary for Grace Frye Evans of Cameron

Amelia Grace Frye Evans of Cameron passed peacefully from her earthly home to her heavenly home on Saturday, November 22, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Grace was born on May 25, 1938, in Carthage, N.C. to the late William Glenn & Mary Ann Maness Frye.

Grace was raised in a Christian home where her mother read the Proverbs to her daily. These truths of Godly living were planted in her heart as a young girl. At the tender age of 12, Grace surrendered her life to the Lord at a church summer camp. From that time on, the desire of her heart was to live a life that honored and pleased her God.

A chance encounter with a handsome young man at the picture show led to a long and happy 68-year marriage, 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Grace was lovingly called Mammy, a name given to her by her first grandchild.

Grace was a smart and hard-working woman. She was a telephone operator, farmer’s wife, and substitute schoolteacher. After her last child graduated high school, she went to college and became a nurse. A vocation that allowed her to share her caring, compassionate heart with others.

Grace was a member of the Bible Tabernacle Church, where she and Ernest faithfully attended. She loved her church family dearly, and they loved her.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest Clayton Evans, Sr.; daughters, Jean Currin (Roger) of Cameron, Sonya Stalls (Don) of Vass, Evelyn Scaggs (Bob) of Harrisburg, and daughter-in-law Lisa Evans of Cameron. Siblings, Angie Bailey of Chesapeake, VA, and John Frye of Vass; Grandchildren, Matthew Evans (Stacy), Brock Holder (London), Amanda Criscoe (Nathan), Lance Holder, Sam Stalls (Rebecca), Lydia Sibbald (Phil), Rob Scaggs (Ariel), Nolan Evans (Meritte), Spencer Scaggs, Jay Stalls (Victoria), Jenny Scaggs and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Grace was preceded in death by her son Clayton Evans, Jr.; son-in-law Roger Holder; Siblings Cora King, Wade Frye, Allen Frye, David Frye, Edward Frye, Thornton Frye, Leland Frye, Eleanor Stewart, Tommy Frye, Delaney Frye, Eugene Frye, June Frye, and Gayle Frye.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Bible Tabernacle. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1, one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Johnson Grove Cemetery in Vass. Condolences may be sent to www.coxmemorialfuneralhome.com.
