Obituary for Steven Thomas Gesme

It is with much sorrow that we announce the passing of Steven Thomas Gesme last Friday, July 17.

From a young age, Steven cherished sports (particularly football), anything with an engine, working with his hands, and a hearty laugh.

As a youth, he was athletic and constantly in motion— playing center on his high school football team, and serving as a volunteer firefighter. As an adult, he was the person you could share beers with while you worked on projects around the house.

Born in Milwaukee, Steven was as proud of his Green Bay Packer shareholder status as he was of his Harley Street Glide. He loved the camaraderie of his fellow riders, but also found solitary peace on the open road by himself.

Steven was never more at ease than at home with his beloved “Strawberry,” his wife of four years, Tabitha (née Saunders) and their three pups, Kylei, Lilly, Reighlei, as well as their cats Louey, Cooper, and MaeLynn.

Steven valued family above all else. His father, Thomas Gesme, was his best friend, and best man at his wedding. Caring for his mother, Cynthia West Gesme, was always at the forefront of Steven’s mind.

Steven is survived by his wife; mother and father; brother, Michael; sister, Nicole Park (Billy); grandmother, Norma West; his mother and father-in-law, Tim and Angela Hastings; brothers-in-law, Timothy Hastings, Jonathan Phillips (Cassie), Billy Saunders, Jr; sister-in-law, Morgan McQuoid (Harry); nieces and nephews Gaven, Elijah, Alysa, Olivia, Wilow, Austyn, Declan, and Logan; aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.

Steven’s family takes solace in knowing his younger brother, Dylan, was there to welcome him in the hereafter.

Steven was also preceded in eternal life by his paternal grandparents, Roger and Betty Gesme; his maternal grandfather, William West; godfather and uncle, Art Biersack; uncle Michael Grell, whom at the age of ten, Steven tended to during Michael’s final months on earth; and grandfather-in-law “Papa Clyde” Saunders.

Visitation will be held at Boles Funeral Home, 425 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, Southern Pines, NC on Friday, July 24, 2020 from 6-8 pm.  COVID-19 guidelines will be observed and masks or face coverings are requested.  Graveside services and burial will be held at 7:00 pm on Saturday at Steven and Tabitha’s home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Animal Advocates of Moore County in Pinehurst.
