Sheriff warns against fake arrest warrant scam

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields is warning the community of a fake arrest warrant scam.

“Scammers are mailing fake letters claiming you have an arrest warrant due to failure to appear in court,” said Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields on the department’s Facebook page on Wednesday. “These letters often look official and may use names of real law enforcement agencies or courts.”

Important reminders from the sheriff:

-Legitimate warrants are never sent by mail asking for money.

-Scammers may demand payment via wire transfer, prepaid cards, or gift cards–this is a red flag.

-Do not call any phone numbers listed on suspicious letters.

-Contact the Moore County Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement directly if you are unsure.

“Stay vigilant. Warn others. Don’t fall for the scare tactics,” said Fields.
