Overturned semi slows U.S. 1 traffic in Southern Pines

An overturned semi-truck slowed the Friday lunchtime commute on U.S. 1 in Southern Pines at 12:30 p.m.

First responders closed a portion of the right southbound lane between the Midland Road and the Pennsylvania Avenue exits.

The semi-truck flipped on its side just off the roadway.

According to the accident report, the truck was “traveling southbound on U.S. 1 and took a turn at unsafe speeds, causing the load in the trailer to shift. The unbalanced load caused the trailer to start to tip, and the driver attempted to hit the brakes to slow down. The trailer tipped over, dragging the cab with it. Both cab and trailer landed on their right side off the travel way.”

No injuries were reported from the single-vehicle wreck on the busy highway.
