Power loss, road closures following SP wreck

Several roads were closed, and some Southern Pines residents were left without power after a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly after 3 p.m., a vehicle crashed into a utility pole near the intersection of E Indiana and E Morganton. The impact of the wreck was so strong that the utility pole was knocked off-kilter when struck by the KIA, resulting in lines being brought down across the road and heavy damage to power equipment.

According to authorities on-scene, both the female driver and a pediatric patient were transported to Moore Regional Hospital via EMS. Air care was on standby but was not called, and both vehicle occupants were transported to the hospital for treatment. Their condition is unknown at this time.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation at this time, and no contributing factors were provided.

The Southern Pines Fire Department cautions that power may be off for a few hours, and roads will continue to be blocked until utility companies can fully make repairs, replace equipment, and clear the scene.

“This is a terrible intersection,” said a witness who lives nearby and heard the crash happen. “The roads are narrow, too. Going through here, you just have to hold your breath and pray.”
