Southern Pines woman DWI crashing into State Highway Patrol car

A Southern Pines woman is facing several charges including DWI and child abuse when she crashed into the back of a State Highway Patrol vehicle in Wake County Saturday night.

Officials said at approximately 10:30 p.m., the trooper’s car was hit on Interstate 40 when two State Highway Patrol troopers were initially investigating a previous crash.

Sydney Neilson Torrel, 28, and her unrestrained 5-year-old daughter were injured and transported to Duke Hospital in stable condition. The two troopers were also transported and released a short time later.

The troopers were responding to the original accident that left a disabled vehicle in the road. Torrel crashed into the rear bumper of the parked Highway Patrol car.

Torrel was charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving, misdemeanor child abuse, a child restraint violation and failure to reduce speed.
