A driver passed away after his car flipped in Southern Pines on Friday.
The single-vehicle wreck occurred just before 7 p.m. on NE Service Road, which runs parallel to U.S. Highway 1 between Midland and Pennsylvania roads.
A landing zone was set up at Memorial Park in Southern Pines for a medevac helicopter to fly the man to a trauma center. The helicopter landed at the park at 7:15 p.m.
However, EMS took the patient to Moore Regional Hospital instead, where he died shortly after, according to Southern Pines Deputy Police Chief Charles Campbell.
The N.C. State Highway Patrol report identified the man as Darius Tolovana Becton Burkes, of Fayetteville.Â
This is the second fatal car crash Sandhills Sentinel has reported in two days. On Thursday, two people were killed on Highway 24/27 near Robbins.
