A horse died in a barn fire Tuesday evening on Youngs Road in Southern Pines. The fire was called in just before 9:20 p.m.
Initial reports were that 14 horses were in the barn. Later it was determined that four horses and two minis survived the fire; however, a Palomino horse perished. The barn was a total loss.
“The barn fire was a tragic accident. Our family is devastated by the loss of one very special horse,” said the family of the horse. “We would like to thank everyone who helped rescue our beloved horses and to the firemen and women who worked tirelessly to put the fire out. This is an incredibly sad time for us as well as the horse community.”
The flames from the burning barn sent embers blowing across the fields, but the cold pouring rain kept the embers from igniting the surrounding fields.
The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
Responding to the scene were units from Southern Pines, Cypress Pointe, Aberdeen, Pinehurst, Whispering Pines and Fort Bragg.
Also on scene were Moore County EMS, Public Safety, and the Moore County Sheriff’s Department.
