Obituary for Mary J. Barnicoat

Mary J. Barnicoat, 81, of Pinehurst, NC passed peacefully Saturday, July 25th 2020. Mary was born in Los Angeles, CA on November 29th, 1938. She was an only child and grew up with her parents (Ruth (Bruhl) and Van Van Voorhis) in San Bernardino, CA.

Mary was a certified Teacher, after earning her Bachelors’ Degree in Education at San Diego State University. She substitute taught occasionally, but was a wonderful mother providing a loving environment to her 3 children, Stephen, Sheryl and Karen, in the communities of Mission Viejo, CA and Bloomfield Hill, MI.

Mary was an amazing person in supporting her children’s successful swimming achievements, as well as tending to the many other swimmers who lived with the Barnicoat family while training for the Mission Viejo Nadadores. She managed to stay grounded in her own individual activities, with volunteering at the Episcopal Church, golf and friends. After residing in Park City, UT for a number of years, Mary moved to the Sandhills of North Carolina where she continued her love for the game of golf. She was very active in the Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst’s Azalea League, including her accomplishment of a “Hole-In-One”.

Mary is survived by her children: Stephen Barnicoat (Dallas, TX), Sheryl Jones (Melbourne, FL) and Karen Little (Aberdeen, NC), her 6 grandchildren (Andrew, Thomas, Connor, Morgan, Blaine and Hayden) and son-in-law’s Craig Jones (Sheryl’s spouse) and Christopher Little (Karen’s spouse).

A private family celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Charitable donations, in celebration of Mary’s life, can be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church Southern Pines, NC.
