Firefighters extinguished a vehicle fire that spread to nearby grass in Vass Thursday evening. The fire broke out along N.C. 690 near Lakebay Road and was quickly brought under control by responding fire units.
According to the Crain’s Creek Fire Department, the call came in just before 6:30 p.m. When crews arrived, they found a Honda Civic engulfed in flames, with a small grass fire spreading toward a nearby cutover area.
Soon after arriving, firefighters brought the fire under control and extinguished the flames before they could spread further.
Recently, dry conditions across the region have increased the risk of fires spreading quickly. With ongoing drought conditions, even small fires can ignite nearby grass, brush, or wooded areas and grow rapidly.
Highway 690 was temporarily closed in both directions while crews worked the scene. One lane of traffic later reopened as operations continued.
Responding agencies included Crain’s Creek Fire Department, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, and the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
