obituary Marie Kathryn Bahr

Marie Kathryn Bahr (Gioimo), 81, of Southern Pines, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, June 13, 2020.

Born on January 23, 1939 in Fairfield, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Martino Joseph and Kathryn Ella Gioimo (Kane). She was predeceased by her son, Henry (Hank) A. Bahr III.

After moving to Moberly, MO, the family settled in the greater St. Louis area. Marie graduated from Mercy High in 1956.

Marie married Henry A. Bahr in 1959. They moved east in 1960 to New Jersey, where they lived for 25 years. While raising three children, she was active in PTA, Girl Scouts and several business associations. Once her children were older, she was employed with Princeton Bank/Chemical Bank for 18 years, rising through the ranks to become Regional Vice President of Branch Operations before opting for early retirement to move with her husband to North Carolina.

The great joy and focus of her life were her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the unofficial historian of the Kane family of Iowa, including any and all branches of the various family trees sprouting from her mother’s family of eight siblings. The world lost an amazing person. All will miss her zest for life, smiles and laughter, words of advice, hugs just when needed, strength and unconditional love.

Marie is survived by her husband of over 61 years, Henry A. Bahr; children, Abby Pinter (Tom) of Pinehurst, NC and Peter Bahr (Carol) of Duxbury, MA; grandchildren, Sara Green, John Pinter, Maggie Harner, Stephen Pinter, Jenna Bahr, Devan Bahr, Christopher Bahr and Henry Pinter; and great-grandchildren, Kathryn Green, Blane Mills, Jordan Harner, Isabella Green, Nayeli Pinter, Henry Harner and Mason Pinter.

She is also survived by three loving sisters, Veronica Burg (Ken) of O’Fallon, MO; Elizabeth Short (Art) of O’Fallon, MO; Alice Brewer (Dan) of St. Louis, MO, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private interment will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Cemetery in Southern Pines, NC.

Donations can be made in her name to First Health Hospice and Palliative Care of Pinehurst (West End), NC, The American Cancer Society or to Sacred Heart Church of Pinehurst, NC.
